Payment & Payout Policy

This policy explains how payout offers are calculated, when payments are issued, and the payment process followed by CardSell.

Effective date: 1 August 2026Last updated: 1 August 2026
Offer shown before you submit Approval required before redemption No fees deducted from your quote Electronic payouts only

Step by step

From submission to payout

  1. 01Submit gift card

You review the payout offer shown on screen, then submit the card details.

  2. 02Verification

We confirm the brand, validity and available balance, and run duplicate and fraud checks.

  3. 03Authorisation email

If the card clears verification, we email you an authorisation request with the final amount.

  4. 04Seller approval

Nothing is redeemed until you explicitly approve. Decline and the card stays yours.

  5. 05Payment processing

After approval the card is redeemed and your electronic payout is prepared and released.

  6. 06Electronic payout

Funds are sent to the payout details you provided, subject to your payment provider.

Section 1

Purpose

This policy provides transparency about how payout offers are set, which payment methods are used, and how payments are processed once a sale is agreed. It is written so that you can see exactly what happens to your card and your money at each stage.

Payout eligibility always depends on two things: successful verification of the gift card and your explicit authorisation of the transaction. Until both have happened, no payment obligation arises.

Section 2

Payout Offers

  • The payout offer is displayed before a gift card is submitted.
  • You can review the offer and decide whether to proceed — submitting is entirely your choice.
  • No fees are deducted from the offer you accept; the figure you approve is the figure we send.

Payout offers may vary depending on:

Gift card brand

Different retailers resell at different values, so rates are set per brand.

Available balance

Offers are based on the balance actually confirmed during verification.

Market demand

Resale demand moves over time and rates are reviewed to reflect it.

Verification outcome

If the confirmed balance differs from the amount entered, the offer is recalculated.

Internal pricing policies

Our own pricing and risk policies inform the rate published for each brand.

Timing of submission

The rate shown at the point of submission is the rate applied to that submission.

Offers are indicative until verification completes

The displayed offer is not guaranteed until the verification process is completed. If verification shows a different balance, we will recalculate and send you a revised figure for approval rather than proceeding on the original amount.

Section 3

Verification Before Payment

Every submitted gift card is verified before any payment is processed. Verification may include:

  • Balance confirmation — establishing the live, unspent value on the card.
  • Card validity — confirming the code and PIN are active and usable.
  • Brand eligibility — confirming the issuing brand is one we currently purchase.
  • Duplicate detection — checking the code against current and historic submissions.
  • Fraud prevention screening, applied automatically and manually where appropriate.

Verification does not guarantee acceptance. A card may clear one check and fail another, and we may decline a submission after verification where our fraud prevention checks raise concerns.

Section 4

Seller Authorisation

Payment begins only after verification AND your explicit authorisation

If the gift card successfully passes verification, CardSell sends an authorisation request to the seller setting out the confirmed balance and the final payout amount.

No verified gift card is redeemed without the seller's explicit authorisation. Payment processing begins only once verification has succeeded and you have approved the transaction.

If you decline, or do not respond within the period stated in the authorisation email, the submission is closed and the card remains yours to use or sell elsewhere.

Section 5

Payment Methods

Approved payouts are issued using the supported electronic payment methods available through CardSell at the time of your transaction. You select your preferred method and provide the relevant payout details as part of your submission.

  • Cash payments are not available under any circumstances.
  • We do not pay third parties — payout details must belong to the seller.

Available payment methods may change over time as providers, costs and supported rails change. The methods offered to you during submission are the methods currently available.

Section 6

Payment Processing Times

Payment processing times vary and depend on factors including:

  • Completion of verification, which can depend on the issuing retailer's opening hours.
  • When the seller responds to the authorisation request.
  • The payment method selected.
  • Processing times applied by the relevant payment provider or receiving bank.

Estimated times are guidance only

Any timeframes shown on the website or in our emails are estimates provided for guidance. CardSell does not promise instant, same-day or guaranteed payment times, and cannot control how long a payment provider or receiving bank takes to make funds available.

Section 7

Failed or Delayed Payments

Payment may be delayed where:

  • Additional verification is required before the transaction can be completed.
  • Incorrect or incomplete payment information has been provided.
  • Technical issues affect our systems or the submission itself.
  • Processing by a payment provider or receiving bank is delayed.

CardSell will make reasonable efforts to resolve payment issues and to keep you informed while we do. If a payment is returned because the details were incorrect, we will contact you to confirm the correct details before reissuing it.

Section 8

Rejected Transactions

No payout is issued where:

  • Verification fails — for example the card has no balance, or the code or PIN is invalid.
  • Seller authorisation is not received within the stated period.
  • Fraud indicators are detected during screening or review.
  • The gift card is determined to be ineligible under our acceptance criteria.

Where a submission is rejected before redemption, the card is not redeemed and remains yours. Our Gift Card Acceptance Policy sets out the eligibility criteria in full.

Section 9

Taxes & Legal Responsibilities

Sellers are responsible for understanding and complying with any personal tax obligations or legal reporting requirements that may apply to the money they receive from selling gift cards. This may depend on your circumstances, your country of residence and the frequency and value of your transactions.

CardSell does not provide tax, accounting or legal advice. If you are unsure whether a payout needs to be declared, please seek advice from a qualified professional.

Section 10

Policy Updates

This policy may be updated periodically to reflect changes to our payout methods, providers, pricing approach or legal obligations.

The latest version will always be published on the website with an updated "Last Updated" date. The version in force at the time of your submission is the version that applies to that transaction.
